Attack on Titan Season 1 Episode 3 Overview
After a rough introduction to their commander Keith Sadies, the cadets learn about Eren’s history and his aspirations. After that, Eren finds it difficult to train in ODM gear, but with some motivation from his new friends, he is able to overcome his struggle. The Commander later admits that his belt was somehow damaged, and Eren has no trouble training with his functional gear. In this episode, Eren is recruited as a cadet and learns about the ODM gear to fight with the Titans and how to kill them.
Examining the 104th Cadet Corps recruits, drill instructor Keith Sadies hurls insults and punishments at those who provide him with poor answers. The abuse does not apply to those who saw the horrors from two years ago. Their eyes had a strange look, and their determination had already been weakened by the horrible occurrence two years ago.
The instructor scoffs when Jean Kirschtein informs Sadies that he intends to join the Military Police in the interior. They are told by Sadies that in their current state, they are not useful to the crown. Then he discovers Sasha Braus in formation, chewing on a stolen potato. She is made to run around the fields till she wants to pass out as punishment. Despite this, she was most upset over losing the right to eat.
That evening, Eren and the other cadets discover that carts have taken the dropouts to work the fields. Such is the end for people who fail to succeed in the military. Everyone is interested when Eren says that he and Armin are from Shinganshina. Eren describes what happened and how the Colossal and Armored Titan was able to breach the walls as he explains what happened to them.
When asked about regular titans, Eren feels the tinge of pain and remembrance, but he tells them those are not a big deal. They’ll be able to beat them by using omnidirectional gear.
Eren responds that joining the Military Police is for big shots while Jean believes he’s crazy for wanting to join the scouts. After a short argument, Jean apologizes, and the two shake hands. When Jean first meets Mikasa, he falls in love, but he is heartbroken to learn that she is seeing Eren.
Sasha collapses that evening after receiving her punishment. Thankfully, she is fed and put to bed by two other cadets.
The next day, the cadets continue their training using omnidirectional gear using wires attached to mounted poles. Many others, like Mikasa, pick it up right away, but Eren can’t even force himself to stand up straight. That evening, Armin and Mikasa attempt to help him train in vain.
Eren worries that he won’t be able to cut it at dinner. Mikasa proposes they give up instead of trying again the following day when Armin advises him to. Throwing away their life is no laughing thing, and whether Eren can serve as a soldier is out of their control.
Eren asks Jean and Connie for assistance so that he can utilize the Omnidirectional equipment since he doesn’t want to give up. The two make fun of him for acting tough the days earlier despite his lack of skill. Eren then turns to Bertholdt and Reiner for guidance, but they are unable to give any.
After what they witnessed in Shinganshina, Berthholdt questions why they want to serve as soldiers; Armin responds that they cannot keep silent. They are from south of Wall Maria, said Bertholdt and Reiner, who also came into contact with the giants that night. Everyone was in such a panic that they were unable to recall what had happened.
The four bond over their kinship, as they’re the only ones who’ve seen the horror firsthand. Eren declares he wants to murder them all as they walk outside to talk about why they joined the corps, but Reiner reassures him that he will pass the exam the next day.
All of the other cadets are staring at Eren as he stands alone in the training area facing Sadies. They watch breathlessly as the cables are pulled free. Eren succeeds in staying upright but quickly falls over. He continues notwithstanding this. After realizing his unit was broken, Sadies instructed him to exchange belts with another cadet. Eren ultimately succeeds after doing this.
Attack on Titan Season 1 Episode 3 Summary
The 104th Cadet Corps’ commandant, Keith Sadies, is mentally dismantling the incoming cadets as part of a rite of passage so that they can be rebuilt as warriors. Sadies does not subject some of the cadets to this treatment, and an officer and his assistant see this as they walk by. The officer just comments that the cadets’ emotions set them apart from the rest of the group as having witnessed the collapse of Wall Maria two years earlier. Although Armin Arlelt is ironically not spared, these cadets are revealed to be Annie Leonhart, Mikasa Ackermann, Bertholdt Hoover, Eren Jaeger, and Ymir.
The commandant sees Sasha Braus eating a stolen potato as he moves down the line. Everyone is in shock at her total lack of restraint as she eats the potato at that same time. Sasha cuts her potato in half, hands him a piece, and sneers, indicating that they may share it while Sadies tries to figure out why she is eating it.
Later, Sasha’s punishment of jogging until she is exhausted is seen by Eren, Armin, Marco Bodt, Conny Springer, and Mina Carolina. They note that this punishment did not alarm Sasha as much as when she was informed she would not be allowed any food. One of the cadets, Marco, recalls that Eren seemed unaffected and that he and Armin are from Shiganshina. Eren then admits that. The remainder of the gang is taken aback and starts interrogating Eren about the Colossal Titan.
As a result, other cadets swarm around Eren at dinnertime as he narrates how the Colossal and Armored Titan appeared. When Eren starts to feel sick from remembering his mother being devoured, Marco advises them to stop questioning him so they don’t compel him to talk about things he’d rather not recall. Eren, however, only explains this as his impatience to start his training and wipe out the Titans with the Scout Regiment.
Eren is stopped by Jean Kirschtein, who makes fun of his desire to serve in the Scout Regiment. The two prepare to fight because Eren does not understand Jean’s motivation for joining the Military Police—simply to live inside the Walls.
When the dinner bell sounds to finish the meal, the tension is released, and the two stop arguing. Jean notices Mikasa as people start to leave and falls in love with her. He tries to talk to her, but all he manages to say is that her hair is lovely.
The cadets start exercising with the Omnidirectional mobility gear the next day. Eren struggles miserably to maintain his balance and needs more training from Armin and Mikasa, both of whom are adept at controlling the equipment, especially Mikasa. He passes unconscious, and Mikasa and Armin assist in his recovery. Other cadets make fun of his performance during dinner, especially after he promised to kill every Titan.
Conny and Jean, who are still in the dorm, are unable to help, so Eren turns to Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover for help. The group shares their tales of how they initially came into contact with Titans, despite their initial hesitation. Reiner provides Eren some advice on the gear after they have discussed their motivations, and then they part as friends.
Eren then returns to the training rigging after Sadies let him one more attempt to balance on the omnidirectional mobility equipment before he was taken to the landfills. At first, Eren seems to be able to keep his balance, and his classmates start to cheer. However, just as suddenly, Eren turns upside down once more. After placing him back on the ground and giving him some time to reflect, Sadies orders Eren to trade gears with Thomas Wagner. Everyone is amazed by Eren’s ability to maintain his balance even while using damaged gear when Sadies reveals that his gear was defective.
