Attack on Titan Season 1 Episode 16 Overview

Following an investigation into the murders of Sawney and Beane, the cadets of the 104th are given the option of joining one of several regiments. Informing the cadets of the Scout Regiment’s future mission, Commander Erwin implores them to support their cause, and several cadets end up becoming full-fledged Scouts.
After rejoining his buddies, Eren finds out about Marco’s passing. The 57th Exterior Scouting Mission was embarked upon by the Scouts from Calaneth District a month later.
The Choice
After the deaths of the two giant test subjects, the recruits carefully go over their equipment. Armin believes it was a retaliation assault that backfired and hurt mankind. Connie acknowledges that when he joined the cadets, he was unaware of titans; but, it is now time for them to select their regiments.
Jean regrets Marco’s passing at the recent funeral pyre and cleaning. While he is aware of his need to battle, he is also conscious of not becoming as insane as Eren. He at once recalls Marco’s compliments on his maturity and promise as a leader.
He regretfully acknowledges his wish to join the scouts while probing Ymir and Christa about which Regiment they would join.
Connie is advised by Annie to make the decision that seems right to him. Armin states that he will really join the scouts, and Annie praises him for having bravery despite being weak. She replies that she only wants to survive when Armin asks her why she’s joining the Military Police.
The members of the Levi squad learn that the examination turned up no evidence as to who killed the test victims. They question Eren if additional students from their class would attend since they are concerned that rookies will join their Regiment; he is unsure.
Jean confesses to his pals that he is hesitant to enlist in the Scouts but wants to make his own decision.
Risking it All
The rookies are addressed by Commander Erwin, who also informs them of Eren’s impact on their operations. He explains to them the strategy for searching the Shiganshina district basement for vital information about the titans.
Armin believes it would be dangerous to make this information too widely known and wonders what Erwin could be considering. Erwin then proceeds to outline the strategy for attacking Shiganshina from the side. In the previous four years, 60% of their personnel perished, and this next operation is expected to result in roughly 30 deaths. But if they make it, they’ll be soldiers who can take on anything. He asks those who want to join other regiments to depart and encourages those who still want to risk their lives to defend humanity to remain here.
Cadets begin to leave the building as Erwin’s lieutenants express concerns about his address. As soon as Jean sees them all, she begins to have second thoughts, and Sasha and Connie share her feeling. Jean screams in agony into the sky.
Erwin salutes his brand-new recruits before asking them to pledge their hearts. Sasha, Connie, Jean, and the others are filled with desperation and remorse, and Erwin commends them for their courageous choice.
To Freedom
The next morning for training, the new rookies report to their squad commander. Combat was less of a priority than adhering to Commander Erwin’s exact formation for the next mission. Armin is perplexed that after meticulously stating their locations, Eren’s whereabouts cannot be located.
Levi’s team informs Eren of his path, and the other crew members are also suspicious that Erwin has another objective in mind for this mission that is too private for them to know. They must concentrate on doing their bit and have faith in him. The moment they cross the castle, Eren is reunited with his buddies at last. He is taken aback to learn that everyone, including Jean, has joined the scouts. Only then did he discover that Marco had perished in the dark.
Eren acknowledges to his pals that he is not completely in control of his talents. With all the uncertainty surrounding him, Jean warns them that they could all pass away. Not willing to squander their lives on a pointless cause, he begs Eren for an assurance that he can accomplish it, and Eren responds by saying he can.
The time arrives for the procedure to begin. The scouts shout as they open the gates while carrying the wings of freedom on their backs.
Attack on Titan Season 1 Episode 16 Summary

Due to the deaths of the two test subjects, the troops are being looked into for using omnidirectional mobility equipment without authorization. One soldier finds it hard to understand that murdering Titans may result in punishment, while another claims that they were useful research subjects after all. They note that the cadets are being targeted and that they were all exhausted. According to Armin, this actually dealt a damage to humanity. In spite of originally wishing to join Scout Regiment, Conny claims that he kind of comprehends the villain’s motivations, saying that he never wants to see a Titan again. Then he recalls Eren’s decision to enlist in the Scout Regiment on the night of the fight.
Then, when Conny asks Annie for her opinion, she merely advises him to make up his own mind. As they continue their conversation, Annie commends Armin for his boldness, and Armin tells her that she is actually kind. Eld and Gunther at the Scout Regiment HQ announce that the perpetrator has not been located before asking if any cadets are interested in joining their division. When asked about it, Eren just responds, “There were several that wanted to join, but I’m not sure about now.” After Levi shows up, the group of four embarks on a patrol.

While Jean, Conny, Armin, and Sasha continue to deliberate, the troops wait at another location. Then a soldier orders them to form a line. Erwin Smith then approaches them to ask the troops to join his branch. To Armin’s amazement, who wonders whether Erwin has a secret agenda, he describes the regiment’s next task and even divulges details about the basement of Eren’s former home.
Erwin also warns them about the bleak outlook for Scout Regiment soldiers, noting that 60% of them had passed away in the previous four years. Erwin concludes his speech by dismissing those who wish to join other divisions. As many people start to leave, Jean, Sasha, and Conny claim that they have already witnessed the eating of humans by Titans. Despite this, they ultimately decide to stay, saluting alongside Mikasa, Armin, Reiner, Bertholdt, Ymir, Christa, and other soldiers as Erwin commends them for facing their fears.

The training for the new recruits then starts, although it mostly consists of recalling Erwin’s long-range reconnaissance formation. When Eren and the rest of Levi’s squad learn about this tactic, they begin to question if Erwin has any more ideas that he has not yet shared with the soldiers. Later, after Eren has finished cleaning, he sees Mikasa and Armin and goes to meet them. Mikasa asks whether Eren was tortured and then declares that she will get revenge on Levi.
When Eren later reconnects with his buddies, he is surprised to see Jean among the Scouts, albeit not as much as when he learns that Marco has passed away. The former cadets then put on their brand-new uniforms as Eren marvels at them while thinking of Marco.

Eren then inquires as to their participation in the operation, and Mikasa responds in the affirmative. Jean then starts questioning Eren about his Titan abilities in an effort to confirm whether or not he actually attempted to murder Mikasa. Eren affirms this as well as the fact that Mikasa is unable to fully control his powers, despite his reluctance and attempts to justify his acts.
Jean says that he wants to know why he is dying because of how hopeless the situation is, but in the end he chose to rely in Eren. Later, as Erwin leads the men beyond the Wall, the bell begins to ring, signalling the opening of the gate and the start of the 57th mission.
